dumplings or WONTONS

i made wontons the other day. without one of those little machines that everyone is raving about, and of which i am not yet the proud owner.

inside my wontons i put some finely diced spring onion, some chicken mince and i think that was it. i sealed the wontons (round ones, bought from the supermarket) with a cornflour and water paste.

i cooked them in the soup, which just had some standard vegetables, ie carrot, onion, some green beans cut up and tossed in.

when they cooked in the soup they contracted prettily and turned out like REAL WONTONS.

i was proud of myself.

right now i'm cooking up a beef bourgignon type thing without red wine. it's bubbling away, but i have to turn it off in a minute and put it in the fridge while i go and get the kids, then take them all to the dentist.

it's cold, windy and rainy.

Just to stimulate some discussion, I plan to make potato, celeriac and pear mash tonight (from a recipe) to go with some roast pork. Do you think it will be OK or vile?

I'll let you know in a couple of days if you were right!

That's interesting, because I was less sure about the pears in the mash. In the end, it was a little disappointing. The mash was a bit wet and too celeriacky. The recipe was for a roast rack of pork with beurre bosc pears caramelised in maple syrup and roasted, served on the mash with sage leaves. It probably would have been better just with potato mash and with roast celeriac on the side. Live and learn!

hey guess what, i mixed up celeriac with fennel. it was the aniseed taste that i was suss about. but even so, celeriac to me is a bit bland. but the pears sound good. and they were on the mash, not in the mash. perhaps even better. i would go the pears and mash, forget the celeriac or anything else.

thanks for getting back to me on this most important matter
